Family Influence
Like most of you, I was born at a very early age... don't worry - not going back that far... but the influence starts early... When I was young, my dad worked at a gas station as an auto mechanic. Every day he would come home, sit on the couch, and first thing he would do is grab the paper to check his stocks. I remember looking at his hands which were always rough and stained with that days work written all over them... perhaps, what I remember most about those hands was dark rings of dirt under all his finger nails, because that is what I could see as those hands held that paper... I remember thinking at the time, what a stark contrast - the hard work of hands and the work of one's mind - I learned the two are not incompatible.
My dad was very happy with his investment advisor, they were friends, and my dad did well. He eventually sold his stocks out, and bought his own eight bay gas station... he then had quite a few mechanics working for him. By the time I joined the Navy, my dad had several stations, and his hard work and determination to follow his dreams influenced many... my brother is a doctor, I have one sister who is a registered nurse, and one who is a psychologist... all of my siblings graduated from college and are in fields dedicated to helping others with their mental and physical health... not bad for a man with humble hands.
My dad helped me get a college degree as well, but unlike my siblings, mine is in Economics and Finance. I just could not get that newspaper out of my mind I suppose.
The Day this Business Began
I doubt I will ever forget the day I realized that I wanted to be in this business... as I write this, I am a few short weeks from my 25 year wedding anniversary. Before I was married, this man, who is now my father-in-law, asked me to join him in his study, and he talked to me about my future - most of what I remember from the conversation was feeling terrified. I really didn't know what I wanted do with my life. I guess I figured I would just see what happens - I learned that day that it is a really good idea to have a plan for the future. The big moment occurred when my now father-in-law said that he had been around the banking business most of his life, and if he could go back and do it all over again, he would probably be a stock broker. When he said that, something inside me just clicked... maybe it was because of hearing my dad talk so much about the stock market growing up - maybe it had something to do with wanting to make my soon to be father-in-law happy... but it hit me like a ton of bricks - that is what I am going to do! I never looked back.
The Take Away
I feel blessed to be part of such a wonderful family, I can see their influence in my life, and in the "Anchor Advisor" practice. Like my brother the doctor, we try to understand where it hurts financially and prescribe what is needed for wellness - like my sister the nurse, we continue to be there every step of the way to provide competent ongoing care - like my sister the psychologist, we consider more than the physical needs that can be seen in terms of dollars and cents, but also emotional and psychological needs which can't be seen or measured... like the lesson learned from my father-in-law, we try to make sure our clients have a strategy in place for the future... and finally, the lesson learned from dear old dad - with humble hands, eager to serve, along with hard work and determination, we aim to help our clients achieve their goals and dreams... we would be honored to take part in yours!
